Meet Phil: From Member #2 to Instructor at Amano Pottery Studio

When Amano Pottery Studio first opened its doors, we had no idea how quickly our community would start taking shape. And right at the heart of it—literally from the very beginning—was Phil, our second-ever member.

If you spend any time in the studio, you’ve probably seen him: easygoing, thoughtful, quietly hyping up anyone within a 10-foot radius. Phil’s journey with clay has been one of curiosity, consistency, and the kind of dedication that reminds us why we built this place in the first place.

From member to studio monitor to instructor

Although Phil has been in contact with clay his whole life, he approaches learning with the kind of patience and curiosity that clay rewards. Over time, he became a familiar face during open studio hours, always experimenting, learning, and offering a hand to anyone struggling with their first bowl.

Eventually, we asked him to become a studio monitor, and from there, it was clear he had a natural gift for teaching. Today, Phil leads several of our pottery classes, sharing his thoughtful approach with both new and returning students.

Why students love learning from Phil

Phil has a way of breaking things down so even total beginners feel confident. His classes are known for being relaxed, encouraging, and fun, but also full of helpful techniques and tips. Students consistently mention how supported they feel and how much progress they make in just a couple of sessions.

You’ll find Phil teaching:

  • Beginner 6 Week Courses

  • Private Beginner Classes & Events

  • Specialty classes like Fermentation Jugs and Hand-built Pipes.

A note from Phil himself

“I started pottery because I needed something creative in my life. I stayed because of the people. Amano feels like a place where everyone grows together—whether you're learning to center for the first time or perfecting your hundredth mug. It’s cool to now help others find their own rhythm with clay.”

Why we love highlighting members like Phil

Our studio was built to be a place where people connect, learn, play, and grow. Phil is a perfect example of what happens when someone embraces the process and lets clay become part of their creative life.

If you’re thinking about trying pottery—or getting back into it after a break—Phil’s classes are an amazing place to start.
